Independent technician platform guide

Choosing an independent technician platform

A practical checklist for broadband, fiber, telecom, IT, and security technicians. Start with the work you can do, the costs you will carry, and who confirms the assignment.

Start with local scopes, not a platform ranking

Write down your service area, travel limits, tools, credentials, and availability. Ask which current scopes match those limits and what the company expects at closeout. A platform’s feature list is not evidence that suitable work is available near you.

For example, before considering a fiber scope, confirm the testing equipment, documentation, access requirements, and travel involved. Before an IT or security assignment, confirm the devices, permissions, and any licensing requirements.

Check rate cards and total costs

Compare the same scope on the same terms. Record the labor rate, minimum callout, travel, materials, overtime, return visits, cancellation terms, and payment timing. Then add membership charges, applicable platform fees, insurance, equipment, and your own business expenses.

$0 percentage-based platform fees does not mean zero total cost. Use our pricing terms and the tour’s example documents to build your own comparison. Do not compare a technician membership with a company software package as though they buy the same thing.

Check per-job insurance and coverage

Ask what coverage applies to the specific scope, when it starts and ends, and what exclusions, limits, deductibles, or documentation requirements apply. Confirm any company requirements before accepting work.

With 1099.careers, insurance costs are separate and fractionalized per job, not free. Read the insurance program details and confirm the applicable coverage and cost for your work.

Keep credentials portable

Keep your own copies of certificates, licenses, insurance documents, and work records. Ask what you can download, what a company can review, how expiration dates are handled, and whether another company will accept the same evidence. A stored document is not the same as a company accepting it for a particular scope.

Use the workspace tour to review example documents and prepare questions about your credential record.

Understand review, company confirmation, and support

Find out what happens between joining and starting a job. Who reviews your readiness? Who confirms the company, scope, rate, and schedule? What must be approved before dispatch? On 1099.careers, review and company confirmation are not automatic dispatch.

Ask who you contact for a changed scope, site-access problem, missing approval, or payment question. Confirm support hours and escalation steps rather than assuming every issue has the same contact.

Compare Field Nation and WorkMarket on their own terms

Field Nation’s official pricing page lists Plus, Premier, and Enterprise company packages, with talent sourcing and vetting, work management, dispatch rules, integrations, and payment processing. It says Contact our sales team to learn more. That page is not a verified technician fee schedule. Read the Field Nation comparison.

WorkMarket calls itself The all-in-one system to manage your independent contractors and presents onboarding, verification, payments, Labor Clouds, assignments, integrations, and an IT field services marketplace. Its homepage directs pricing inquiries to sales without listing a dollar amount. Read the WorkMarket comparison.

Official sources, verified : Field Nation plans and pricing; WorkMarket; WorkMarket contact sales. 1099.careers is not affiliated with either provider. Features, pricing, and terms may change; confirm current details directly. These are two named options to investigate, not a best-platform ranking.

How 1099.careers works

1099.careers helps independent broadband, fiber, telecom, IT, and security technicians run their business through direct company relationships, rate cards, and $0 percentage-based platform fees. Review the scope and rate with the company before committing to work.

  • Free to join. No credit card required.
  • Optional paid membership is $97/month, by invitation after approval and an onboarding call. If you opt in, payment is due at checkout with your consent and renews monthly until cancellation.
  • Insurance is not free. Insurance costs are separate and fractionalized per job. Review coverage, exclusions, and the applicable cost before accepting a scope.
  • A profile or readiness review is not automatic dispatch. Review and company confirmation are part of the process; joining or paying does not guarantee approval, work, or income.

Read the membership terms, check the insurance program details, and use the technician workspace tour to inspect example documents before deciding.

For companies, the starting point is a free Field Operations Audit, followed by a custom pilot proposal, not the technician membership price. See the company process.

Using 1099.careers alongside existing platforms

You do not have to replace an existing platform to consider 1099.careers. We do not require exclusivity. A technician may keep existing work relationships while exploring direct company relationships and rate cards here. Check the current terms of each platform, including any rules that apply to an existing company relationship.

Compare current local scopes, rates, travel requirements, payment terms, and total costs for your own business. We cannot substantiate higher work volume or lower total costs, and do not claim that 1099.careers is safer than established marketplaces.
